Bolivia boasts spectacular birdlife and scenery, with over 1,400 species, including stunning endemics such as the Blue-throated and Red-fronted Macaws, Black-hooded Sunbeam, Masked Antpitta, and Cochabamba Mountain Finch. The country also hosts around 100 near-endemics and specialties, many of which are easier to spot here than in neighboring countries like Peru, Argentina, and Brazil. These include the Titicaca Grebe, Tucuman Parrot, Upland Antshrike, and Hooded Mountain-Toucan, along with more widespread species like the Greater Rhea, three species of flamingos, the Andean Condor, more macaw species than any other country, and the Toco Toucan. Bolivia also boasts several endemic subspecies that are likely to be soon elevated to full-species status: these include localized subspecies of Red-tailed Comet, Velvet-fronted Grackle, Plain Softtail, Gray-eyed Greenlet, and Great Pampa Finch. With all this biodiversity, Bolivia is the birdiest landlocked country on Earth.
Bolivia’s diverse habitats range from the dry Chaco, vast wetlands, and lowland Amazonian rainforest to Yungas cloud forests, Lake Titicaca, and the high Andes Puna landscapes, including the salt desert of Salar de Uyuni. Even a two-week trip can only scratch the surface of Bolivia’s major habitats and famous sights. Key sites include the famous “Death Road” and Noel Kempff Mercado National Park, home to many rare birds and pink river dolphins. Madidi National Park, one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world, spans nearly 6,000 meters in altitude, from lowland rainforest to the Andes. However, its vast size and restricted access make it challenging to fully explore Bolivia on a short visit.
