Colombia is the Holy Grail of birdwatching: with almost 2,000 species, no other country on earth has such an extensive bird list. One-fifth of all the world’s birds are found here, of which almost 90 are endemic.
But beyond these staggering numbers, this megadiverse country combines stunning Andean, Caribbean, Pacific, and Amazonian ecosystems with some of the friendliest people on earth: it’s truly a joy to go birding in Colombia! Colombia’s geography is as diverse as its culture—from the Pacific Ocean in the west to the Orinoco River in the east, the Caribbean in the north, and southern Andean peaks and lowland Amazon rainforest. Here, the Andes are divided into three long mountain ranges, a unique phenomenon in South America. The wide valleys of the Cauca and Magdalena Rivers split these ranges. The two coastal mountain ranges of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and Serrania del Perijá are home to an amazing concentration of endemic species. Colombia has something for everyone.
A recent commitment to birding tourism has resulted in many new birding routes, lodges, and private reserves, providing remarkable access to the country’s most emblematic birds. Numerous hummingbird gardens and feeding stations throughout the country also make Colombia an excellent destination for photographers.
